(HERNDON, Virginia) February 27, 2024— FranConnect, a market leading provider of sales, operations, and marketing solutions to franchises and multi-location businesses announced today it has acquired RizePoint, a leading provider of quality management systems (QMS) serving global restaurant, retail, and hospitality brands. This is FranConnect’s third acquisition over a four-year period and marks another significant milestone for FranConnect in extending its reach beyond franchise brands to serve the operational needs of the broader ecosystem of multi-unit owners, locations, front-line employees, and suppliers.
The addition of RizePoint to the FranConnect platform brings deep quality management capabilities to FranConnect’s already comprehensive franchise management platform. Designed to help organizations effectively manage compliance, maintain quality standards, and streamline operations, RizePoint is known for its industry leading mobile auditing and inspection platform, used for location audits, health and safety checks, and supplier management. Three of the top five global restaurant brands use RizePoint, along with Ecolab, Wendy’s, Focus Brands, Dine Brands, L Brands, and Sodexo. More than 2 million audits are conducted annually using RizePoint, with over one million users across 120 countries and translated in over 39 languages.
“The challenge of running a multi-location business gets increasingly complex with expansion and growth, regardless of whether franchised or owned. Brands need to ensure that operators are complying with brand standards, but also adhering to health and safety initiatives and following daily tasks and checklists. As well, the growing challenges to our global supply chain means that auditing suppliers is equally important to compliance against those standards,” said Gabby Wong, CEO of FranConnect. “Along with FranConnect’s market leading operational platform, our combined solution will enable us to monitor the performance of a brand, end-to-end, from the brand to the operator, location, front-line employees and even the supplier community.”
Backed by Baltimore-based Access Holdings, RizePoint is headquartered out of Salt Lake City, Utah, with employees across North America and the UK. Rizepoint’s offices and employee base will now be a part of FranConnect’s global footprint. With RizePoint’s customers, FranConnect’s reach will now span over one million locations worldwide.
“The acquisition of RizePoint by FranConnect will greatly benefit our customers and the industry. By uniting forces, we are in a unique position to offer a more robust and comprehensive suite of solutions that will further empower our customers to effectively manage compliance, elevate quality standards, and drive operational excellence. This acquisition will accelerate our ability to innovate, develop, and deploy meaningful advancements to our products and solutions,” said Kari Hensien, CEO of RizePoint.
“We are thrilled to welcome RizePoint customers and employees into the FranConnect community,” said Wong. “Kari and her team bring deep expertise in QMS that our customers want and need from FranConnect. Further, with this acquisition, we continue to demonstrate that we intend to look across the broader market to provide the best tools and solutions to solve the unique challenges facing multi-location businesses.”
Canaccord Genuity LLC acted as exclusive financial advisor to RizePoint for this transaction.

HERNDON, VA., January 11, 2024 – FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise and multi-location management solutions for driving success in sales, operations, and marketing, announces the launch of FranConnect Analytics to provide brands with powerful, on-demand, and timely insights pulled from all areas of the business. Additionally, FranConnect has revamped its Royalty Manager application to address finance teams’ biggest pain points.
The franchise and multi-location model is distributed where accountability is dispersed geographically and through complex ownership structures and relationships. These brands are more dependent than ever on data intelligence to determine where to invest resources that drive the greatest return. But the combination of disparate systems and complex organizations creates siloed views and gaps in the story.
FranConnect Analytics overcomes these issues through pre-built dashboards sourced directly from a single source of truth: its platform. FranConnect Analytics empowers businesses to invest in the areas of greatest return, benchmark internally from sites to regions to brands, identify the strongest performers, and replicate best practices. Operations, Finance and Marketing teams have access to fresh data and insights instantly to drive results across the locations.
The launch of FranConnect's next-generation Royalty Manager is set to significantly enhance the efficiency of financial operations for franchise brands by automating sales reporting and ensuring accuracy in franchise fee calculations, while facilitating the centralization of financial data. Additionally, it offers franchisees transparency into the invoicing and financial aspects of their franchise agreements, fostering stronger relationships. With the addition of the Invoice-to-Pay capability, brands can standardize billing, offer diversified payment options and expedite payment collection, thereby effectively reducing the days sales outstanding.
“Royalty Manager’s redesign and new FranConnect Analytics product capabilities make it easier than ever for teams to draw insights from the platform, creating a unified view into their entire operations lifecycle from lead creation to payment reconciliation “, said Gabby Wong, CEO of FranConnect. “FranConnect improves connectivity of information across the distributed value chain and provides brands with the capability to consolidate that information, improve planning capabilities, and drive standardized operational processes to improve overall system performance.”

HERNDON, Va., July 27, 2023 - FranConnect, the leading franchise, and multi-location management software provider, is excited to announce its launch of the Sign-to-Pay solution in partnership with Flywire (Nasdaq: FLYW), a global payments enablement and software company. FranConnect users can now access Sign-to-Pay directly within the FranConnect platform for key payment flows – bringing best-in-class payment processing to more than 1,500 brands. The Sign-to-Pay solution helps businesses save time and money by automating the collection of initial franchise payments. By streamlining this process, franchisors can dramatically speed up unit opening and start generating revenue more quickly.
For many franchise brands, collecting Initial Franchise Fees (IFF’s) and other upfront investments from new franchisees is a manual, error-prone, and inefficient process. The Sign-to-Pay solution allows franchise brands to collect the Initial Franchise Fee (IFF) and any other upfront investments automatically, online, as soon as a franchise agreement is executed. The payment is facilitated via a seamless integration with Flywire into the FranConnect platform that allows new franchisees to submit their payments via a variety of payment methods and currencies.
"Our customers have told us for years that the speed-to-open problem for new franchise units is a serious pain point, which impacts the bottom line for them and their new franchisees. The Sign-to-Pay solution transforms how franchisors execute the critical last mile of the franchise agreement by reducing the time it takes to collect that initial franchise fee”, said Gabby Wong, CEO of FranConnect. "Through this integration, franchisors can significantly reduce collection time from as long as 2 months to as short as 1 hour – in turn expediting revenue recognition and improving cash flow.”
The integration works by providing a “Pay Now” link on the FranConnect platform immediately after a new franchisee signs the franchise agreement. Following this link will redirect them to a dedicated Flywire payment page where submit their payment securely. Additional benefits for franchisors may include lower international processes fees, faster cash conversions, shorter collections cycle, and a reduction in days sales outstanding.
“Sign-to-Pay represents the first joint solution developed from our partnership with Flywire, and we are excited to see it brought to life,” said Ian Walsh, COO of FranConnect. “It is a great example of the power of our Technology partnership program. That program was designed to bring new value to our customers by introducing complementary 3rd party solutions that extend the value of FranConnect to franchise and multi-unit businesses everywhere.”
The Sign-to-Pay integration with Flywire is one of the key strategies for FranConnect to support franchise CFOs in increasing profitability and reducing days to first dollar.

Partnership aligns with Flywire’s strategy to pursue strategic partnerships as a key growth lever in B2B
Boston, MA, USA - February 22, 2023: - Today, Flywire Corporation (Flywire) (Nasdaq: FLYW) a global payments enablement and software company, is announcing a partnership with FranConnect, the market leader in franchise management technology, to streamline the payment experience for franchisors looking to grow their businesses both domestically and internationally. FranConnect is expected to extend Flywire’s B2B payments platform through its marketplace to enable franchisors to easily collect royalties and fees from franchisees in different currencies around the world.
The partnership between Flywire and FranConnect is designed to provide franchisors more efficiency and access to analytics that enable them to accelerate the payment collection process. Flywire integrates directly into the FranConnect software, helping franchisors to automatically power every transaction, ranging from the initial payments required to sign a franchise agreement, all the way through to managing the ongoing royalty and fee payments from franchisees. Because franchisors can leverage Flywire all from within the familiar FranConnect platform, they can benefit from the ability to easily track and access payments, and to quickly and efficiently settle and reconcile payments.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Flywire and integrate their B2B payments platform into our marketplace,” said Gabby Wong, CEO, FranConnect. “Our brands leverage the FranConnect platform for everything from unit sales and territory development, to brand consistency, performance management, and royalty management but a critical missing piece is providing a seamless payment experience, for everything from set-up fees to managing ongoing royalty fees. Flywire enables us to meet that need, and our users will look to their payments capabilities to help them open-up new growth areas both domestically and abroad.”
The economic impact of the franchise industry is significant. The most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau suggests that 10.5% of all businesses are franchises, contributing $790 billion to the U.S. economy and creating more than 8 million jobs. Franchising is also one of the most common growth strategies for businesses in the U.S. as it enables them to expand into new regions without significant overhead. And increasingly, U.S. franchisors are looking to expand their business internationally to pursue revenue opportunities. The latest data from FRANdata expects franchises’ gross domestic product contribution to the overall economy to be 3% in 2022, with a growth higher than the pre-pandemic level, totaling a $501 billion economic contribution.
Despite this growth potential, it can be difficult for franchisors to scale internationally. They face common headwinds, such as regulatory and statutory requirements in different countries. Additionally, the process of issuing invoices and collecting payments from multiple countries, in different payment types and often in different currencies is highly complex, and traditionally fraught with inefficiencies. In a recent Flywire survey, 88% of surveyed finance professionals said the complexities of collecting cross-border payments impacts their ability to grow internationally. Specifically, 95% say if they could deal with exchange rates in an easier way, they could accelerate their global expansion efforts.
The integration between Flywire and FranConnect enables franchisors to overcome these common hurdles by providing a streamlined payment experience that can be tailored to their franchisees around the world. Powered by Flywire’s global payments network that supports more than 140 currencies in more than 240 global countries and territories, the payment experience through Flywire enables franchisees to pay in their local currency, and in their preferred payment method. Direct integration with FranConnect, as well as with other systems of record like NetSuite and other enterprise resource planning software, helps franchisors to easily collect royalties and fees on time and with full transparency into the payment statuses. Additional benefits for franchisors may include lower international processes fees, faster cash conversions, shorter collections cycle, and a reduction in days sales outstanding.
“We’re thrilled to partner with FranConnect as the first payments provider to help streamline both international and domestic payments for their network of franchisors,” said Greg Leven, SVP of B2B, Flywire. “With our powerful integration, the 1,500 franchise brands who use FranConnect to manage their operations can also rely on Flywire to power their critical transactions, all within a familiar interface.”
“My experience with global remittances before Flywire was characterized by payments being a number of days late, being hit with hidden fees, and managing a difficult reconciliation process,” said Jim Perkins, EVP International Development and Support, Dickey's Barbeque Pit. “Working with and incorporating Flywire as the payment option has been a productivity improvement for my partners, as well as a clear path to timely and financial clarity for all involved.”

HERNDON, Va., April 12, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions for driving success in franchise sales, operations, and marketing, announced today that it has added a powerful new tool to the company's already strong brand consistency capabilities: franchise scorecards. The franchise scorecards, part of FranConnect's Operations platform, equip franchise business consultants with impactful technology to help franchisees drive unit-level economics — replacing tedious and time-consuming manual processes.
"Our new franchise scorecards have the power to transform how franchise business consultants approach improving performance at the unit level," said Jaffrey Ali, Chief Product Officer. "Through FranConnect's technology, they can now aggregate data from field visits, surveys, self-assessments, POS systems, loyalty programs, and more to produce actional insights that further help automate the process of ensuring individual units are successful. We've taken best practices from franchising and standardized the visualization to allow for franchise business consultants to easily compare KPIs to quickly identify the biggest opportunities."
Using the franchise scorecards as a guide, franchise business consultants can then leverage other tools within FranConnect's Operations platforms to educate the franchisee on necessary improvements, direct them to training content, or assign a playbook with a set of tasks to address the highlighted concern.
"Incorporating FranConnect's franchise scorecards had an immediate positive impact on our brand," said Tony Caballero, CFE, Senior Vice President of Operations at Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux. "This capability allowed the team to compare the business in a new light by pulling together data from previously disparate systems and boiling it down into a concise view of performance based on our KPIs. The feedback from our field teams and franchisees has been overwhelmingly positive as they see it as a valuable resource. If used as it is intended any business can benefit from this platform."
Franchise scorecards are the first of several operations-focused products FranConnect will introduce this year. FranConnect has made significant investments in operations over the last few years, including the acquisition of FranchiseBlast in 2021, and will continue to dedicate significant resources to bringing new products to market.

HERNDON, Va., Jan. 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions for driving success in franchise sales, operations, and marketing, announced record sales growth in 2021. FranConnect welcomed over 125 franchise brands and multi-location businesses to its client roster, celebrating its highest-ever bookings year and expanded partnerships with more than 100 brands to triple its annual sales from 2020. FranConnect proudly counts approximately 900 franchise brands and over 300,000 units worldwide among its client base and is quickly becoming the “gold standard” for technology in the franchise industry.
“Over the last two years, we made an unwavering commitment to solve the hardest problems faced by the franchise industry and to support our customers during considerable market volatility,” said Gabby Wong, CEO of FranConnect. “We fundamentally believe that the operational challenges faced by franchise brands are unique and require franchise-specific enterprise technology to achieve scaled growth. Brands not only require applications that support specific processes like franchise sales, field operations, and royalty collection, but also need a clearer view of the performance of the franchise system as a whole and standardized methods for engaging with owners.”
FranConnect reported that increased adoption of its Operations solution, launched in 2020, drove over one-third of the company’s sales growth in 2021, largely due to customers seeking technology that automates support of unit-level operational needs. The growing challenges of labor shortages, continuously-evolving regulatory and health requirements, and greater pressure for unit-level profitability means that Brands are looking for solutions that help drive better results. As a result, FranConnect expects continued growth in market adoption of its Operations solution in 2022.
“Working with FranConnect has been a real blessing. It’s given us data at our fingertips and it's allowed us to take the data to manage the business.” said Chris Dull, CEO of Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a fast casual franchise concept with more than 400 locations across 34 states. “Coming into Freddy’s organization, we had dozens of spreadsheets and other data assets around the company that all operated in silos. And we were able to take all of that data and aggregate it into the FranConnect system, which created one source of truth.”
For the coming year, FranConnect has a focused market expansion plan and an ambitious technology, solutions, and experience management roadmap as it continues its push toward reaching over 1,000 customers and a half million locations worldwide. After growing its employee base by 20% last year, FranConnect is continuing to hire across all functions as part of the company’s growth plans. FranConnect was recently named one of the 2022 “Best Places to Work in Virginia” by Virginia Business. In the coming weeks, FranConnect will open an office in the United Kingdom, its first office in Europe, to better serve the EMEA market and will continue to grow its strategic partnership program, including the Consulting Alliance Partnership Program launched in April 2021.
“We continue to heavily invest in our multi-year growth strategy across all areas of our business, including our product, people, and customer experience and will look to expand our partnership capabilities to provide broader reach,” said Wong. “The success of our customers and the broader franchise market over the last two years demonstrates the strength of the franchise business model and its ability to continue to drive economic growth and recovery. We look forward to continuing to be a premier vendor and partner in this market.”

(HERNDON, Virginia) July 15, 2021 — FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions for driving success in franchise sales, operations, and marketing, today announced that in the first half of 2021 the company achieved its highest-ever revenue growth and rate of customer acquisitions. FranConnect added or expanded relationships with more than 100 franchise brands and multi-location businesses — spanning more than 35,000 franchise locations. Those new clients and expanded partnerships now include nearly half of Entrepreneur’s Top 50 and Top 100 Franchises.
“Throughout the challenges of the last year, we worked closely with our customers and the market to help us sharpen our view on the broader technology needs of the franchising ecosystem,” said Gabby Wong, CEO of FranConnect. “Over the course of the first half of 2021, we delivered on an ambitious technology roadmap that goes well beyond franchise development in order to solve the growing challenges faced by brand CFOs and COOs, as well as franchise owners. As the only enterprise-class software company solely focused on supporting franchise and multi-location businesses, we continue to dig deeper to unlock solutions to the hardest and newest business challenges facing this market. Our first-half performance is a reflection of this strategy, with significant planned product investments for 2021 and 2022.”
Technology Innovations
FranConnect continues to invest in technology to better serve franchisors and multi-unit businesses. In the first half of 2021, the company delivered several new enhancements that benefited the market and contributed to the company’s growth:
In addition to customer adoption of new product innovations, FranConnect’s accelerated momentum in 2021 stems from strategic partnerships the company rolled out in the first months of the year. In January, the company acquired FranchiseBlast, creating the industry’s only platform that helps franchise brands and multi-location businesses manage operational success, end-to-end, from the brand to the unit-level. In the second quarter of 2021, FranConnect established a Consulting Alliance Partnership Program with industry-leading consultants Franchise Performance Group, MSA Worldwide, iFranchise Group, and FranNet. These partnerships make customers more successful by pairing the domain expertise of leading franchise consultants with FranConnect technology. Additionally, FranConnect grew its team by nearly 20% overall, particularly in the areas of Customer Support, Engineering, and Product Management.
FranConnect’s impressive momentum is translating to success for its customers, as well. Paris Baguette, an international, French-inspired bakery with more than 4,000 locations worldwide, beat its own growth goals by closing an unprecedented volume of new deals in early 2021.
“We have been using FranConnect as we nurture leads, streamline overall operations and build roadmaps for our café openings,” said Mark Mele, chief development officer for Paris Baguette. “Our team had set aggressive sales and opening goals for 2021, and we were challenged with a database of leads weighed down with thousands of contacts that hadn’t been contacted in over four years. With the help of FranConnect’s outreach and lead nurture programs, we closed 25 deals in the first quarter alone and added 28 more in April. The support of FranConnect’s robust platform in all areas of our business has made the difference in our success.”

FranConnect’s new clients and expanded partnerships include national and international brands such as Sport Clips Haircuts, Hyatt, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Buzz Franchise Brands, Clean Juice Bar, and Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop.
“Despite the economic impact COVID-19 has had on the market, franchising continues to be a strong business model that is critical part of economic growth, especially in capital-constrained environments. We saw an immediate need to help our customers navigate through the pandemic. Over the course of 2020, FranConnect’s products and solutions supported improved field operations and deeper franchisee engagement through the shutdowns, while leveraging our significant expertise in franchise development and growth to help our customers prepare for market recovery. Prior to joining FranConnect, Shelley spent 12 years at CareerBuilder, most recently as Vice President of Sales & Success, Commercial & Consumer Services. At CareerBuilder, Chris was responsible for $100 Million in annual revenue across SaaS, Advertising and Data Analytics solutions across 5 business units spanning Middle Market through Fortune 100.
FranConnect also promoted Tessa Husain as Vice President of SMB Markets. Husain has been with FranConnect for nearly three years, and most recently served as the Director of Sales for Emerging and Growth Sectors. (HERNDON, Virginia) Oct. 8, 2020 — FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions for driving success in franchise sales, operations, and marketing, today announced a partnership with Lumin.ai, a technology platform that uses conversational artificial intelligence (AI) to convert more leads into sales opportunities. FranConnect’s customers can now leverage the integration of Lumin.ai to dramatically improve their franchise development efforts by automating and streamlining the early stages of their sales process — leading to a much higher conversion rate than traditional, manual sales tactics.
The Conversational AI solution works behind the scenes 24/7 to provide franchise sales teams with more efficient, immediate engagement of prospective franchisees. The SMS-based AI bot, based on the Lumin.AI Smart Scheduler, arranges introductory sales conversations and automatically populates calendars, seamlessly integrated with FranConnect’s core Sales CRM solution.
“After years of helping hundreds of franchise businesses improve their sales functions, we understand that ‘speed-to-lead’ is more important than ever. The Lumin.ai integration combines cutting-edge AI with user-friendly SMS communication to help FranConnect customers capture and engage leads more quickly while providing a better buyer experience in the process,” said Jaffrey Ali, Chief Product Officer. “And during a time when high-touch lead generation is not feasible, the frictionless sales process is an imperative.”
This newly-launched partnership has already garnered industry accolades as part of FranConnect’s initial launch. This past September, Floor Coverings International, a mobile floor-covering franchise, utilized FranConnect’s AI solution and was named the winner of the Franchise Update Media 2020 Innovation Awards in the Most Innovative Consumer Self-Service Tools category for its inventive use of technology to expand its system. Through this approach, Floor Coverings International reported a strong return on investment, including a 100% increase in its monthly leads from prospective franchisees and an improvement in its lead closure rate of over 40%.
“We know that ‘speed-to-lead’ makes a big difference in keeping franchisees engaged and FranConnect’s sales platform helped us leverage automation to ensure that all leads were engaged immediately,” said Tom Wood, CEO of Floor Coverings International. “FranConnect, together with Lumin.ai, has achieved the highest ROI of any platform in use by Floor Coverings International. We’re excited about what we’ll continue to achieve through this partnership.”
Founded in 2016 by Tom Ngo, a technology veteran with extensive experience creating and managing innovation at corporations ranging from Disney to early-stage startups, Lumin.ai was created to elevate AI conversational agents to the level of collaborators, in a field where most “bots” merely take commands, gather information, and answer questions.
“In the shifting landscape of customer expectations, it has become de rigueur to start relationships on the right foot by giving prospects control over when and how to communicate,” said Tom Ngo, CEO of Lumin.ai. “Through our partnership with FranConnect, we are providing franchise brands with technology that dramatically improves their ability to differentiate in a market where potential franchisees are increasingly awash with choice.”
FranConnect will host a live webinar with Lumin.ai to discuss the role of artificial intelligence in franchise development on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. EDT. To learn more and register, please visit https://blog.franconnect.com/franconnect-webinar/role-of-ai-in-franchise-development.

Now in its fifth year, the report reveals critical best practices relevant for franchise operators looking to confront the economic reality of the pandemic.

“This year’s report confirms that there was already a notable decline in franchise sales leads before the pandemic, the result of a then full-employment economy. And now, with unemployment rates having skyrocketed, there is going to be a rush by those impacted as they seek new opportunities and a sense of control in these turbulent times,” said Keith Gerson, CFE, President of Franchise Operations at FranConnect. “What the pandemic has accomplished is to reveal the cracks that already existed in many franchise sales programs and systems.”
Some of the most important findings gleaned from the report serves as a guidepost to improved sales effectiveness:

Herndon, VA, May 5, 2020 – FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management software, today released updated data about the business impact on the franchising industry caused by the pandemic-induced downturn. The survey is an update to FranConnect’s original Business Impact survey conducted in late March, when shutdowns were just going into effect. The before-and-after comparisons give franchise businesses granular insight into how their peers have pivoted to survive, navigate and, in some cases, grow despite continued uncertainty.
“Franchises have been among the hardest hit businesses by the COVID-19 pandemic. Widespread store closings and uncertainty are a fact of life for franchisees and brand executives across sectors,” said Robert Cresanti, CEO of the International Franchise Association. “These insights on franchise sales, executive perspectives, and ‘what’s next’ can guide businesses as they seek a path forward.”
The data revealed several positive indicators, especially related to Franchise Sales efforts, and expectations for franchisee churn. At the same time, many organizations now have longer, more realistic timeframes for location re-opening.
Among the key findings:
Survey Details: 233 respondents contributed to the collective dataset, concluded on April 30, 2020. Participants represented eight industries: Quick Service Restaurants, Business Services, Personal Services, Residential/Commercial Services, Real Estate, Full-Service Restaurants, Hotel/Lodging, and Retail Food Products & Services.

(HERNDON, Virginia) May 1, 2020 — Recently, FranConnect CEO Gabby Wong sat down with Franchise Times editor Laura Michaels to chat about leadership, advice, favorite foods and more.
Read the full interview below or directly on Franchise Times.
Who would play you in the biopic about your life?
I would be flattered if Tina Fey played me. She’s amazing, she’s a groundbreaker, the first female head writer for SNL. She’s sharp, funny and just so witty.
If you were to open a franchise, which would you choose?
I have to give the caveat that we love the franchise model and all our customers. If I had to pick, it’d be something in personal service. Probably fitness.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
This is easy for me. My father is from China and my mother is from France, so I grew up eating very strange things. I’ve eaten cow heart and bone marrow and cow tongue … just about every part of the cow.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
I have a 6-year-old daughter and she loves Moriah Elizabeth. She’s a crafter, she has these YouTube videos on squishy makeovers. Squishies are these little soft toys and she takes used ones or ones that were donated a makes up different creations, painting them, whatever. We’ll watch them on Saturday mornings.
If you could dis-invent one thing, what would it be?
Nothing, I love innovation. Even if there’s something that’s not used how it was originally intended, I think innovation is so important. I wouldn’t get rid of anything.
What superhero power would you like to have?
Oh, the Wonder Twins! Do you remember the Wonder Twins? They can just adapt into anything. So, I’d want the ability to adapt very quickly.
What’s your favorite travel destination?
I’ve been a lot of places. We have a very large location in New Delhi, India, and I’ve been there three times in the last year. It’s so rich in culture, but it’s not an easy place to travel to. But really, it’s so rewarding. Sixty percent of our company is there and I’ve made it a focus to have an executive presence there.
I wanted to be a writer and I knew I wanted to go into business leadership. I come from a family of doctors, my dad was a doctor, and there was probably an expectation that I’d go into medicine, but it just was not for me. I think in writing there’s the goal to find the truth in a way that connects everybody, and that’s needed to drive a big organization. And I now use writing as a way to help me distill my thoughts, and I use that to help me be clear with my team.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a writer and I knew I wanted to go into business leadership. I come from a family of doctors, my dad was a doctor, and there was probably an expectation that I’d go into medicine, but it just was not for me. I think in writing there’s the goal to find the truth in a way that connects everybody, and that’s needed to drive a big organization. And I now use writing as a way to help me distill my thoughts, and I use that to help me be clear with my team.
What’s the last thing you cooked at home?
I’ve been traveling so much lately so, takeout? I’m kidding! I make a mean chicken parm. My husband loves it and it’s something the whole family would eat. I have three kids, two boys, 16 and 14, and a daughter, who’s 6.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
To not be afraid to hire people around you that are better/more knowledgeable than you. As a leader, your job isn’t to be the smartest, most knowledgeable person in the room, but to set the strategic and operational vision, and mobilize the team’s strength and expertise to accomplish that vision. If you are afraid to hire people around you that are smarter/more knowledgeable than you, then you will always be stuck doing the same thing and, as a result, it will be hard to advance in your career.
Career advice that I often give other people is, ‘Don’t chase title or money, focus on building your human capital and skillset. Doing so will result in better career longevity, breadth of core business skills, and ultimately open up even more opportunities for advancement.’
*Editor’s note: This interview took place during the IFA Convention in February, where I had a chance to sit down with Gabby for a fun Q&A.

(HERNDON, Virginia) April 1, 2020 — FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions, found approximately two-thirds of franchisors are actively moving forward with franchise sales efforts despite the paralyzing impact of the COVID-19 crisis in anticipation of an influx of Americans looking for business opportunities as unemployment soars.
FranConnect surveyed 233 executives of franchise brands to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the franchising industry. The survey shows how franchise businesses of different sizes and in different sectors are reacting through changes to their strategy and operations. Among the key findings:
“Based on our survey results, COVID-19 has had the most significant impact on the restaurant industry and personal services[1] segment, so it’s not surprising to see franchisors scaling back or temporarily ceasing their franchise sales programs. As 67% of franchisors in our survey expect system sales to return to pre-pandemic levels in about six months, a conservative approach to new growth makes sense,” said Keith Gerson, President of Franchise Operations, FranConnect. “However, other segments that haven’t seen nearly the same degree of revenue decline are continuing their recruitment efforts. Historically, when unemployment begins to grow, many franchisors see increased interest in their franchise opportunity. There’s a historic perspective that as the job market softens and Americans no longer have confidence in their current employment situation, many may want the security of being their own bosses.”
According to FranConnect’s survey, franchisors remain optimistic for a quick recovery. Despite many brands feeling the impact of government-mandated closures, nearly half (48%) anticipate locations will reopen within two months and two-thirds (67%) expect system sales recovery within six months. System size did not seem to change the feelings around the length of time the closures would last or the expected recovery timeframe.
“Through recessions, natural disasters, and other widespread crises, we’ve continued to see the resiliency of the franchise business model and the benefits of being in business for yourself, but not by yourself. Franchisors and franchisees have benefitted greatly from sharing best practices with each other, enabling them to endure the crisis,” said Catherine Monson, Chair of the International Franchise Association (IFA) and CEO of FASTSIGNS International, Inc. “Although our community has never seen anything like COVID-19, I have no doubt we will come out stronger having been through this together.”
Additional survey findings showed:
Government-mandated Closures
Declining Sales
Layoffs & Furloughs
Recovery
Franchisee Support
Franchisee Turnover[2]

(HERNDON, Virginia) Feb. 4, 2020 — FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions, announced today the introduction of FranConnect Optimize, its newest software solution. FranConnect Optimize is the franchise industry’s first performance management solution aimed at helping franchisors solve their biggest challenge: driving performance and accountability at the unit level.
According to a January 2020 survey of 258 franchise operations professionals, FranConnect found that 96% of respondents struggled to drive franchisees’ unit-level success in part because of ineffective processes and systems for following up on audit and visitation findings. Additionally, over half (52%) of respondents said their franchisees did not understand the top three operations activities that had the greatest impact on unit success.
“Growing a franchise system in today’s environment is extremely complex,” said Gabby Wong, CEO of FranConnect. “The most successful franchise brands move beyond compliance management and nurture a consultative relationship with their franchisees to ensure that they have the knowledge, skillset, and tools to perform and succeed. As a result, we determined it was important to create a solution that enables a strategic coaching process, allows brands to codify unit success, and amplifies that expertise across the franchise system.”
FranConnect Optimize replaces the manual and disjointed processes associated with franchisee performance coaching and enables an organization to:
“Optimize is the result of years of working in the franchise market and listening to our customers talk about the pain points of rapidly scaling a brand that’s widely distributed, yet has lean corporate resources,” added Wong. “Based on this feedback and our commitment to providing customer value, we set out to create a solution to allow franchisors to link goals and success criteria to insights and actions in order to more consistently drive improved unit performance and accountability across the entire system.”
“Optimize helps franchisors measure franchisee performance in real time and notifies both support staff and franchisees of areas of concern, along with descriptors of the most probable causes and a recommended action plan,” said Joe Matthews, CEO of Franchise Performance Group. “This tool will help the franchisor standardize and elevate its field support from one of ‘compliance’ to one of real strategic and tactical value, driving both the franchisee and support team to address problem areas as they occur. Optimize is going to be a game changer for franchisors.”
Franchisors will be able to learn more about Optimize when it is revealed at FranConnect’s exhibitor booth (#603 )at the upcoming International Franchise Association (IFA) Annual Convention taking place Feb. 8-11, 2020, in Orlando, Florida.

The Franchise Book of Mentors, the new book from Keith Gerson, FranConnect’s President of Franchise Operations and CMO,, is a collection of insights from 23 of North America’s leading franchise performers, world-renowned authors and people who have overcome insurmountable struggles to achieve their life goals.
The book is now available online for the suggested price of a $25 donation toward the nonprofit organization VetFran, a strategic initiative of the International Franchise Association and the Franchise Education and Research Foundation that helps connect talented and patriotic veterans with franchise business ownership opportunities.
“100% of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go toward helping support and give thanks to our nation’s biggest heroes,” said Gerson. “Veterans leave the armed services with invaluable skills that are uniquely matched to franchising and it is our civic duty to connect those talented and patriotic citizens with franchise opportunities. The proceeds of this book will also help provide veterans with counseling and other types of support when they return home from duty.”
“Rarely does one have the opportunity to learn from franchise leaders while also supporting veterans in franchising,” said Robert Cresanti, CFE and IFA President and CEO. “IFA is honored that FranConnect is having the proceeds of the Franchise Book of Mentors going to IFA’s VetFran Program. The experts and entrepreneurs in this book have valuable insights gained from their successful careers, and I hope that prospective and new franchisees take advantage of this chance to learn for a good cause.”
The concept behind The Franchise Book of Mentors is to assemble a select group of proven franchise experts and high performers in the fields and have them share some of their recipes for success in 23 chapters. Designed to be a resource for both seasoned professionals as well as those who are just breaking into the franchising industry, the book provides answers to unique questions from those with a lifetime of expertise in franchising.
The Franchise Book of Mentors features in-depth interviews with leading franchise performers, including the founder of Sports Clips, Gordon Logan; the President of The UPS Store, Tim Davis; the CEO of Firehouse Subs, Don Fox; the COO of Neighborly Brands, Mary Kennedy Thompson and more.
“It’s an honor to share my insights and experiences, and I hope they are useful to future entrepreneurs, and especially military veterans, as they pursue a career in franchising,” said Tim Davis, President of The UPS Store, Inc. “I was thrilled to find out that all proceeds from The Franchise Book of Mentors will go directly to VetFran. The organization does important work for our nation’s heroes, teaching veterans how to channel the valuable skills gained through military service to business ownership.”

Gabby Wong, President and CEO: I’ve spent the better part of my 25-year career focusing on the nexus between business transformation and leveraging enterprise-class technology to solve complex business problems.
I started my career in management consulting at PriceWaterhouse (now PwC) and then later transitioned to Deloitte Consulting’s strategy and process practice, where I leveraged customer analytics engines to help Fortune 1000 clients drive new offerings, transform operations, and grow revenue. Through my work in management consulting, I discovered a passion for innovation and enterprise technology, which led me to the world of private equity-backed software and high-growth technology companies.
I have worked extensively with technology solutions in the areas of customer and performance analytics, customer success, and customer experience, and led large global operations for several successful, high-growth software companies, including Primavera Systems (now Oracle), Trusted Computer Solutions (now ForcePoint), Verint Systems, and Clarabridge.
I see customer analytics, and understanding the customer’s and market’s viewpoints, as central to driving business growth and performance improvement. This philosophy has underpinned my time at FranConnect, where upon joining as the EVP of Customer Operations in 2016, I led the team through a transformation project with the goal of improving customer focus and better scaling customer success. This transformation has been a critical factor to FranConnect’s growth over the last two years.
In 2019, I moved into the new role of President and CEO.

Wong: FranConnect’s mission is “to partner with the franchise market to the grow successful franchise systems”. Our view is that franchise brands can’t grow unless the units themselves grow. It’s an ecosystem where successful brands don’t only focus on unit count growth, but unit-level performance and optimization, in order to scale the system.
We do this by offering innovative, proven technology products and solutions that support the key metrics of building a successful franchise brand, including selling and expanding new franchisees, improving unit operations and performance, growing revenue streams, ensuring brand consistency, and ultimately driving the rapid expansion and penetration of the brand. Also critical to the growth of any franchise brand is the relationship between the franchisor and franchisee. Our solutions support building an improved dialog and franchisee engagement.
All our products and services focus on driving successful outcomes for the system, whether it be more units, revenue, profit, or growth.
1851: Is FranConnect cloud-based?
Wong: Yes, FranConnect is 100% cloud-based platform, hosted-to-scale on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
We've invested heavily in our products over the last two years to ensure that we are providing new capabilities and significant improvements to our users and that we are architected to take advantage of a world-class hosting environment like AWS. Our CTO is a pioneer in SaaS enterprise architecture and our head of product strategy is a noted technology strategist in analytics and retail solutions. Recently, we've received the “Well Architected Certification” from AWS, which not many vendors achieve. As a critical partner to the franchise market, we are committed to ensuring that our product is highly interoperable, available, scalable and secure.
As we continue to grow and innovate our product capabilities, we are also committed to ensuring that our products are fully mobile accessible. We understand that the distributed franchise user workforce is “on-the-go” and need access to our platform from anywhere. We have three apps in the marketplace—FranConnect Sky, FranConnect Field Operations, and FranConnect CRM.
We also continue to invest in FranConnect’s analytics function. In 2019, we will add new analytics products that underscore our vision to serve as the “Command Center” for visibility into the performance of the system. These products will allow franchise brands to derive actionable insights from enterprise-wide data. Moving beyond simple reporting and dashboard views, we’ll deliver the capability to define operational playbooks based on performance attributes and define workflows targeted to key stakeholders.
1851: How did you get to become the President and CEO of FranConnect?
Wong: Yes, it’s interesting. I think it’s a testament to how important the “Voice of the Customer” has become in driving a successful business. I’ve been in the business 25 years and it’s uncommon to go from a customer success or service role to the CEO role. Organizations now see that the customer is front and center to driving growth for the business, not only in how the customer is serviced, but also in ensuring that customer value and market feedback is incorporated into the future direction of the company and product innovation.
In my role as EVP of Customer Operations, over the last three years I’ve had opportunity to see and understand the customer needs, where the market is headed, and identify gaps in our offerings. Our investors recognized that opportunity and, alongside our management team, asked me to take the lead to put together a multi-year growth and business plan. Upon its approval, they appointed me to my new position.
1851: What does FranConnect focus on?
Wong: FranConnect focuses on growth. Our core mission is growing brands. Our customers grow faster than anyone in the market. We’re also a high-growth company ourselves. That’s what I love about this market – our customers are just like us and it creates a high-empathy relationship. We’re entrepreneurs, growth-minded, and nimble – and our customers are too.
The third element of growth is the growth of our people. Being part of an entrepreneurial company means that our employees get so much more in terms of their own career growth.
1851: How has FranConnect evolved since you've been on board?
Wong: We’ve achieved a lot of growth and transformation over the last couple of years to be sure, in all areas of the business, but that is an outcome of how we have evolved our focus, strategy, and corporate culture.
Evolution is a top-down exercise, but also requires a ground-swell of social movement from every employee. Over the last year, we have examined the market, taken a hard look at ourselves, clarified our focus and mission, and defined our multi-year, multi-phased growth strategy. More importantly, we have focused on creating a great corporate culture where growth-minded thinking is celebrated, and customer value is front and center. It underscores the adage that “culture eats strategy for lunch.”
1851: What do executive conversations focus on at FranConnect?
Wong: Our conversations focus on three key areas—our customers, our employees, and the future of the business and the Franchise market.
First, we work hard to embed the Voice of the Customer in all our decisions, from what we include in the product, to our future road map and vision, how we adapt and change our service experience and ultimately how we reward our employees.
We gather extensive customer feedback through regular survey instruments and the robust data we capture as part of our service transactions across all channels of the customer journey. We have standardized on Net Promoter Score (NPS) as a metric and all areas of the business are tracked, measured and rewarded based on customer feedback. More important than the score itself, we look at the actual comments and feedback itself and do extensive follow-ups to ensure that we understand the customer feedback, negative and positive, so we can improve the customer experience as a business.
This doesn’t mean that we are perfect—we are constantly looking to improve our customer experience—but it does mean that we listen and work hard to drive business decisions based on customer feedback.
Second, as an Executive Team, we talk a lot about employee growth and ensure that we provide an experience and opportunity for our employees to learn, grow, and challenge themselves. We hold regular employee feedback sessions and conduct surveys to understand how we can improve the employee experience. This becomes a critical input to our budget, planning and investment processes, but also becomes a regular topic of conversation as part of our quarterly employee recognition programs.
Last, is the future and where we need to focus innovation and how that helps our customers and employees succeed. We also look how, as a key player in the franchise market, we can help drive that market forward through innovation.
1851: What drives value for franchisors?
Wong: It would be easy for me to sit here and say, selling more units, driving a system revenue, driving unit profitability, faster market penetration. Certainly, these are all important, top-line metrics franchise brands are trying to achieve. That said, at the core of that is information, prioritization, and actionability. That is where I see the value of a technology solution like FranConnect.
The franchise model is unique in that it’s both a B2B and B2C relationship. It’s also a distributed model where accountability is dispersed (geographically and through complex ownership structures and relationships), but growth is aggregated. The whole needs to be greater than the sum of its parts. As a technology provider to the franchise market, our value comes from driving improved connectivity of information across the distributed value chain and providing brands with the capability to consolidate that information, improve planning capabilities, and drive standardized operational processes to improve overall system performance.
1851: How were you able to scale?
Wong: Scaling is a function of mission, strategy and focus, process, measurement, and people. It starts at the very top. Everything stems from our core mission and foundation. From there, you must think about the strategy and how you want to execute it over multiple years. You can’t scale by only thinking tactically about the problems and opportunities right in front of you.
So, we start with a multi-year strategy and then translate that into how we design our business processes and operations in support of that strategy. Metrics and data are critical. You can't undergo any major scaling exercise without access to data and metrics to help you determine whether you're achieving the planned transformation.
Then people. Change or growth is impossible without aligning your people. They must understand the mission, strategy, and the process. They must understand the “why?”. Also, we use a set of operational scorecards and a metrics book run by our FP&A function to monitor whether we are driving the right behavior and making the necessary changes.
1851: How do you keep growing big?
Wong: That's a great question. “Growing big” means “thinking big.” In order to “think big,” it is important for me to carve out space in my calendar to process customer feedback, market feedback, employee feedback, board feedback, as well as take input from mentors, peer groups, and my executive coach. I need an equal amount of time focused on collecting external feedback, but also processing time to think and to be “mindful” of where we need to go as a business.
I am a part of a CEO Group run by Steve Gladis where we meet monthly and discuss and joint problem solve important issues facing CEOs. Steve is an amazing executive coach, thinker, writer, and speaker on executive leadership.
1851: How do you know you're doing the right thing?
Wong: The obvious answer is to say that our results and metrics tell us that we’re achieving our goals – but that's very tactical and quantitative. I always say that it is just as important “how” you accomplish something as “what” you accomplish. It’s about the experience. When I look around our office and I see people dancing (literally) in the hallway, or I see people helping each other when they're already busy working on their own projects, or regularly celebrating each other’s successes, then I know that we are doing something meaningful. That is how I know that we are doing the right thing.
It's not about just what we achieve, it's how we achieve it and the experience that we're providing along the way.
1851: What kind of leader are you in the franchise space?
Wong: Mindful and grateful, which are underrated attributes of a successful leader. Mindful of the market needs, of where we are and where we need to go. Grateful to be a part of a market that celebrates thought leadership, entrepreneurialism and growth-thinking.
FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management solutions, has taken a big step forward in its plan to accelerate innovation with the hiring of Jaffrey Ali as Vice President of Product Strategy and Management.
“In the past few months, we embarked upon an extensive growth strategy discussion to further extend FranConnect’s role as the leading innovator in franchise technology. To fulfil this vision and extend our footprint, we are excited to welcome Jaffrey to our team” explained FranConnect President/ CEO (2019) Gabby Wong. “Jaffrey has an excellent background in both analytics and technology solutions and truly understands the product technology market from a strategy perspective. He’s a great addition to help us further drive FranConnect’s commitment to innovation.”
Ali, a seasoned product management and marketing executive, joins FranConnect with 20-years of product management experience with various technology companies building mission-critical software products for the consumer-packaged goods, risk management and emergency management industries. Ali has spent his career creating highly differentiated product offerings that have built startup environments into serious players in their industry, making him a sought-after expert in his field. Most recently, he served as Head of Product Management, Strategy and Marketing for Haystax Technology, a cybersecurity product company.
“I see FranConnect as an evolution of the work I’ve done building high-impact software that addresses the needs of certain verticals,” Ali said. “The franchise industry is compelling and home to so much entrepreneurship. FranConnect realized the industry was underserved and built its platform over the last decade around specific industry needs, becoming the most sophisticated and successful player in the space. There is a ton of opportunity to further legitimize the space and make franchise management systems like ours an integral and valuable part of franchise operations,” Ali said.
Ali’s background working with innovators and thought leaders in various industries to develop software solutions puts him in excellent position to lead product management and strategy for FranConnect. Ali plans to impact strategy by taking the company vision and creating a product roadmap for success, translating to concrete milestones for the product. The management aspect of his role will involve determining ways to build and invest in the product on an ongoing basis to gain customer traction and increase value for customers and, in turn, the company.
“The FranConnect product has so many uses and so much potential in the franchise industry,” Ali said. “The commitment the company has to itself and its product is inspiring. I’m excited about this role because FranConnect is at the right stage, in the right market and possesses the ability to make a huge impact. Franchise management requires new technologies and FranConnect has established itself as the go-to resource to deliver those. We are on the verge of the next phase of growth, ready to scale and become a nationally recognized innovator in the technology sector,” Ali said.
Wong added, “We’ve taken a close look at what the market really wants to see from FranConnect, and we have some exciting new products on the way in 2019. As we continue innovating beyond our projected roadmap, Jaffrey will play an essential role in helping us ensure that we have the best product management strategy in place as we take these new products to market in order to help both current and future clients receive the maximum benefit.”
Fitzgerald boasts a wealth of franchise development experience. Before joining No Limit Agency, he held development roles at franchise brands BrightStar Care, Quiznos and Wireless Zone. Fitzgerald will draw from that experience as he speaks with development executives on four topics relating to franchise development.
“We’re really excited for Sean to play such a large role at this year’s FranConnection,” said Keith Gerson, FranConnect’s president of franchise operations and its Chief Marketing Officer. “He knows this industry inside and out, and he’ll be discussing some extremely important topics with some of the best thinkers in the business.”
The first of those topics is dead leads and how to revive them. In a panel titled "Capture Ghost Leads and Resurrect The Dead,” Fitzgerald will lead a discussion with Scott Oaks, Director of Franchise Development at First Light Home Care; Eric Lavender, VP of Franchise Development at Saladworks and Georgia Chasen, Vice President of Franchise Development at Sylvan Learning. The panel will look at how franchise brands can re-engage leads that have fallen out of the pipeline.
“Most franchise brands are letting go of countless leads that could be converted,” Fitzgerald said. “Less than five percent of web visitors convert directly to leads, and more than 50 percent don’t respond to calls or emails according to FranConnect’s all new Franchise Sales Index Report. But that’s not the end of the story. It might just mean that they are beginning their research and aren’t yet at that trigger moment.”
The second panel, titled Don’t Guess. Measure: “Key Conversion Benchmarks, From Application to Discovery to Close,” features Mike Mettler, Senior Vice President of Franchise Development at Orangetheory, and Chris Connolly, Director of Franchise Development at BrightStar Care. The panel will cover the most important metrics a development team should be looking at to make sure their strategy is effective.
“It’s crucial that development teams are paying close attention to the right KPIs to track their success,” Fitzgerald said. “There are specific things you can look at to measure your messaging, validation, sales and a number of other elements.”
The third panel, “Using Your Entire Digital Arsenal to Capture and Convert Franchise Candidates,” will look at the methods by which modern franchisee candidates research brands and make decisions. Keith Dzike, Executive Director of Development at Wireless Zone and David Wells, Senior Director of Franchise Recruiting at U.S. Lawns will join Fitzgerald to discuss all of the tools franchise’s have to attract candidates.
“The way that people research franchise brands has changed dramatically over the past decade,” Fitzgerald said. “Candidates have so much information coming at them from so many brands, and they are savvier than ever before. They don’t want to be sold, they want to make an informed decision. If you don’t know how to navigate that landscape and speak to those investors, your pipeline is going to dry up fast.”
The final panel hosted by Fitzgerald is called “Fighting for Attention: Measure and Market Effectively to Win the Right Candidates.” Featuring Michelle Rowan, President of Franchise Business Review and Angela Zerda Paules, Chief Marketing Officer at Buzz Brands, the panel will discuss how franchise brands should approach marketing to potential franchisees.
“So many franchise brands have their consumer marketing nailed, but they don’t know where to start with their franchise marketing,” Fitzgerald said. “They don’t know how much to spend, they don’t know how to measure ROI, they don’t know what other brands are doing. We’re going to cover all of the essential factors and look at industry statistics to give people a better sense of how to approach their franchise marketing.”
Though they cover a range of topics, Fitzgerald says each of those panels has the same goal: to help franchise brands find and convert qualified franchisee leads.
“Finding the strongest leads is one of the most important things every franchise brand should be focused on,” he said. “There’s no single holy grail for that; there are any number of factors that go into it. And FranConnection is the perfect venue for us to dig into the topic. FranConnect has studied every corner of franchising, and their conference is really one of the most important gatherings in the industry.”
Robert Post, Executive Chairman stated, “The Board of Directors executed an exhaustive search, interviewing hundreds of candidates with prior CEO and software experience. Gabby’s internal candidacy, however, stood out. She brings proven leadership and a strong customer orientation. The customer orientation in particular was a foundation for the strategic planning process that she recently led, which culminated in a compelling roadmap that will deliver innovating products to the market and drive growth in the years to come.” Post will remain in his Executive Chairman role in support of Wong and the management team in the implementation of the newly approved growth plan to more than double the size of the company.
Over the last 24 years, Wong has built a successful career in the high-growth, private-equity backed software industry. She has held executive leadership positions with worldwide responsibility for global operations at Primavera Systems (now Oracle), Trusted Computer Solutions (now ForcePoint), Verint, and Clarabridge. Wong is known for her ability to build organizations that can scale globally, and also remain obsessively focused on product innovation and customer success.
“The franchise industry is dynamic, fast-paced, and competitive, and as a result, our customers are demanding more innovative technology that can help them grow their brands in a faster and smarter way,” said Wong. She continued, “Franchisors and franchisees are highly dependent upon each other for growth. In order to grow and sustain a successful system, franchise brands need to scale processes and engagement to drive rapid revenue growth and unit performance at the local level. This requires innovative solutions that support data-driven decision-making on the performance of the overall franchise operations, and the ability to take action on these decisions in a tangible, measurable way.”
“FranConnect’s market leadership is unparalleled and we are uniquely positioned to support the market in innovating to support the growing needs of the ecosystem,” states Wong. “I am excited about taking the helm of a successful company like FranConnect.”
“The new automation in FranConnect Sky unleashes the creativity of our user community. Now, franchisors can add levels of segmentation into campaigns that they have never had before,” said Sunil Chandran, CTO at FranConnect. “From simplified online capture of prospect attributes and lead tagging, to personalized workflows, the possibilities are endless for improving CRM performance and conversion.”
Updates also address the growing customer need to support more complex multi-brand operations. Users can assign roles and tasks within multiple regions or territories with consolidated reporting across multiple brands and geographies, allowing organizations to scale more efficiently.
Hundreds of brands rely on FranConnect Sky as their system of record for their entire franchise system and getting access to timely, relevant data is key to profitable growth. With the expanded data sharing capabilities via email and file sharing (FTP) features in FranConnect Sky Insights, users can now easily share dashboards and decision-making data seamlessly with team members.
Enhanced User Experience
Improved Branding and Design Functionality
“Based on initial customer feedback, users are very excited about FranConnect Sky’s enhancements, specifically the new data-driven target marketing capability as it provides a new level of differentiation that allows franchisors to truly operationalize data and insights across multiple brands,” added Keith Gerson, President of Franchise Operations and CMO at FranConnect.
FranConnect will be featuring these updates as well as other compelling product news, company updates and industry trends at FranConnection 2018, the premier user conference and thought leadership event for franchising. Over 50 industry experts will speak across five educational tracks on November 5-7 in Washington, DC. Register by clicking here. Space is limited.

FranConnect, recently ranked "#1 top supplier of Online Franchise Technology Services" by Entrepreneur Magazine, is taking down one-size-fits-all brands like Salesforce and Microsoft.
While it’s well known in the franchising industry that FranConnect is designed specifically for franchisors, the competitive advantages of the best practices built into FranConnect franchise management software solutions aren’t always clear. In fact, it sometimes takes franchise brands checking out the competition to see if the grass could be greener before they can truly understand FranConnect’s advantage. That’s exactly what happened in the case of two FranConnect clients, Liberty Tax and Franworth, that temporarily moved to the competing multi-vertical CRM Salesforce before ultimately coming home to FranConnect. Overall, the franchise brands found that complex and costly implementations, lack of basic franchise configurations and an absence of human-touch in customer support from the big-name vendor was not for them.
Liberty Tax Demanded Franchise-Driven Automation
Five years ago, Liberty Tax decided to engage FranConnect for help with optimizing lead-flow and streamlining operations. Less than a year into their engagement, the brand decided to leave FranConnect and move, ultimately only temporarily, to Salesforce.
Martha O’Gorman, Chief Marketing Officer for Liberty Tax, explains why. “We were with FranConnect for only six months when we decided to make a change,” she said. “As a company, Liberty Tax has a very tough time implementing new software of any type – mostly because we try to make everything fit into our way of doing business. At the time, it was like trying to make a round peg fit into a square hole.”
O’Gorman added that processes weren’t as automated as they had hoped with their initial FranConnect implementation. For example, since the brand has locations in both the U.S. and Canada, leads needed to be marked by country when they came into the system. If the country wasn’t properly indicated, then the leads weren’t entered into the automated process correctly. As a result, the Sales Module was not being optimized, causing additional manual work. Liberty Tax also had difficulties getting its online brochure to go through its sales funnel accurately, so leads were not being properly scored which resulted in missed sales opportunities. That was when Liberty Tax decided to look at an alternative solution.
“I became very involved in Salesforce – going to their convention and learning not only about the sales side of its system, but also about all of the capabilities that Salesforce promised. It seems like you can add modules to the system that will do almost anything, so we became very interested in what we could do as an organization with the tool,” said O’Gorman. “We opted to go the call-center application route first when we transitioned over. We learned later that approach was a bit backwards in terms of how Salesforce works. Then, when we tried to add the Sales functionality – that was when things went downhill fast. We couldn’t get anywhere with it. We just could not get it off the ground, even after hiring consultants to help us implement it. That’s when we knew we had to leave. Breaking our contract was a very expensive lesson for us.”
After leaving Salesforce behind, Liberty Tax used Act! CRM for the next sales season. They were familiar with Act! Because they had used it before. Then, O’Gorman ran into some FranConnect folks at a conference in Atlanta and began a dialogue about coming back.
O’Gorman said, “FranConnect came in and did a demo for us to show all of the new capabilities that had been added and the streamlined functionality of FranConnect Sky. Their technology had advanced so much since we left FranConnect, it was easy to see the benefits. We decided to give FranConnect a second try, and we were able to implement it quicker than any other system we had ever done.”
After the easy onboarding, the biggest benefit that Liberty Tax experiences now is greater engagement and adoption across its users, as well as improved results.
FranConnect: Better Lead Tracking throughout the Lifecycle to Convert More Leads, Faster
“As a marketer, the most difficult thing for me is to spend a lot of money to generate leads and have them go into a black hole where I have no visibility into what’s happening. With FranConnect, enabled by a very user-friendly mobile application, I can log in and see a snapshot of everything, anytime I want. I don’t have to wait for someone to pull a report or wait for reports to be updated on a certain day. I can see where we are in the sales process at any time, and it’s been very eye-opening for me to have that access,” O’Gorman said. “The speed to leads that FranConnect provides through automated-workflow, SMS texting, notifications and their sales representatives is what you need to make better decisions to improve your competitive position. Every franchisor is going after the same potential prospects. The care, speed of response and follow-up for those leads will determine who gets the business and that’s where FranConnect helps us excel.”
Franworth Needed a Single Sign-On Enterprise View
Another company that understands the intense competition that’s continuing to heat up in the franchising world is Franworth. Franworth manages multiple brands in its portfolio: TITLE Boxing Club, spavi day spa, Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea, The Lash Lounge and CITYROW. Its diverse portfolio makes it paramount for the company to be working with a well-equipped franchise management solution in order to stay ahead of the competition.
Franworth had been working with FranConnect and found that it was a great tool for each of its franchise brands individually. However, because Franworth isn’t a franchisor in the traditional sense, it had a unique set of needs. Not only was Franworth looking for a solution for its brands individually, but it needed a way to streamline operations and communications across its growing multi brand, multi-unit business. That’s where it started running into some issues – Franworth’s team members were having to navigate five different log ins, reports and licenses for each brand under its umbrella. Because they couldn’t see a clear path to scale with FranConnect, they started researching other options.
“I told FranConnect that we were looking into Salesforce to address our enterprise needs. If I were simply deciding on the best tool to manage one franchise system, FranConnect would win easily. We understood the collective benefit of all our franchisors using the platform, since the system is configured specifically for franchise operations,” said Mike Skitzki, Chief Operating Officer for Franworth. “But we needed a high-level view across multiple brands with multiple units. At the time, we didn’t fully understand the capabilities of the FranConnect Sky platform and we thought Salesforce offered a more robust custom enterprise configuration. It initially appeared like Salesforce would be the right path because of the ‘plug and play’ nature of all the add-on modules available in the Salesforce App Exchange. On the surface, the enterprise promise of Salesforce was very appealing.”
Franworth began its migration to Salesforce in the first quarter of 2018, but by Q2, they decided to pull the plug. According to Skitzki, the process became much more complex than it initially appeared.
“Within a franchise system, there are a number of workflows and business processes that franchisors need to be able to manage to keep their development pipeline moving. Every single one of those workflows and processes need to be custom configured inside of Salesforce. The tool can absolutely handle it, but who will do that configuration and make sure it mirrors what brands need from an operations and legal standpoint? And how much is that going to cost? We thought we had good answers to every question coming into our migration with Salesforce,” said Skitzki. “But the further we got into the migration, and the further down the rabbit hole we went. We realized how many workflows there are and how many processes are necessary to run a franchise system. We ended up looking at either a very robust consulting bill for configuration and ongoing maintenance or a full-time hire of an experienced Salesforce implementer. At the end, it just didn’t make sense for us. Salesforce’s fancy reporting and ability to customize ended up being a deterrent for us. When everything needs to be customized, you’re going to be looking at some pretty hefty costs.”
Ultimately, Franworth realized that the problems they were having, including keeping costs low by operating all brands under one license, weren’t being solved. So Skitzki and the rest of the team made the decision to reconsider FranConnect.
FranConnect: Developed for Franchisors with Everything They Need Already Built In
He said, “The juice wasn’t worth the squeeze with Salesforce. The cost to build out all of those configurations and maintain them wasn’t worth the time and effort. And that all comes with FranConnect right off the shelf. That’s why we decided to cut our losses, double down and return to FranConnect. Everything we needed had already been done in FranConnect with two decades of best practices backing it, so we decided to take advantage of what’s already been built.”
FranConnect’s latest technology has been able to solve Franworth’s multi-brand issues, and together they are now bringing all five of the FranWorth brands with oversight across all units under one license and log in.
“Today, we have five brands in our portfolio, totaling nearly 1,000 units. Even at that scale, we concluded that FranConnect was the only partner that had all the functionality we needed to manage our brands at a reasonable cost. Plus, we have plans to add more brands during the year. I’m confident in FranConnect’s ability to scale with us,” said Skitzki.
He continued, adding, “When you migrate to a new CRM system, there are a significant number of hours and dollars that it takes. There’s a disruption to the system overall. So, if you’re looking at a migration, make sure you really understand the full budget, full project dependencies and full scope of what you’re getting into. FranConnect has spoiled us – you pay one fee, they configure everything, and it works. With other vendors, you pay your license fees and then you must figure out how to make it work for your franchise business. That question is a big, timely and expensive one. For some franchises, it might make sense. But for most of us, it’s a steep mountain to climb.”
Both Liberty Tax and Franworth have found that when it comes to franchise management systems, the grass isn’t always greener with alternatives. By researching available options – and comparing business needs with the functionality of one CRM tool over another – they’ve both now re-engaged a solution, FranConnect, that enables them to operate at a higher level than they were in the past.
“The key to choosing the right CRM tool, beyond the basics of ‘does the system do what you need it to do,’ is service. You’ll know early on what the culture of the company is and what level of support you’re going to get,” O’Gorman said. “When you’re running a business – you want to talk to a person for help, not just enter a ticket online. We did not get high-touch support from Salesforce at all. Their attitude was ‘you bought it, now figure it out.’ Now, FranConnect – they did not let us down. They have been with us every step of the way since we came back.”
O’Gorman explained that they have monthly in-person meetings, weekly status calls and she has conversations at all levels of the company – as high as the President and Chief Customer Advocate Keith Gerson. She said, “They’ve built a culture dedicated to making sure that customer satisfaction is at the highest level. I really feel taken care of with them. FranConnect has found their secret sauce, marrying great product and superior service.”
Skitzki echoes O’Gorman’s thoughts when it comes to FranConnect’s level of customer service. And because hindsight is 20/20, he says there’s one thing that Franworth could have done better – simply communicate more.
“We should have shared our concerns with our FranConnect customer advocate earlier in the process, said Skitzki. “That way we would have learned about FranConnect Sky’s new functionality sooner and never considered alternatives. Open communication saves time, headaches and money. There’s no question that FranConnect has the superior franchising solution and the expert support team to back it up.”
And yet, 62% of franchise organizations do not have a dedicated training program for their field support staff, according to FranConnect’s Operations Survey. In addition, respondents indicate that 32% of FBC’s are only able to make field visitations once per quarter, and 45% only visit once per year (or beyond). When asked if it’s enough to positively impact a franchisee’s performance, 41% said no. In short, the Franchise Business Consultant has one of the most difficult jobs in the system!
“So how’s that working for you” is a question often asked of franchisors by President and Chief Customer Advocate of FranConnect, Keith Gerson. Clearly, not so well.
To that end, the FranConnect Sky Field Ops module was created to enable a FBC to emulate the best practices of top franchise support performers and execute at the highest level while ensuring that there is consistency and documentation that the franchisor is meeting and exceeding its support requirements. It further enables the FBC team by extracting actionable data from FBC assessments and evaluations to manage franchisee compliance and drive performance more effectively. Following a visitation or self-assessment by a franchisee, any shortfall in meeting brand or performance standards will send out regular automated trigger response to follow-up and ensure that action has been taken. It identifies trends and creates programs to address areas of non-compliance. The program seeks to reduce costs and increase engagement through franchisee self-evaluations. Finally, the program benchmarks and correlates key performance indicators across applications such as franchise information management, all centralized and kept in the franchisees' online records including communications history, documentation, QA history, etc. The benefit of FranConnect Sky Field Ops is that, combined with the franchisor’s other best practices, operational performance will increase and drive unit sales.
Finding business management solutions customized to the franchise industry is something FranConnect has been perfecting since 2000, but creating this module was quite the undertaking. Nothing like it existed, and FranConnect had to first research the problem and capture best-practices from its 600+ franchise brands that are clients in great detail and take painstaking steps to map out a comprehensive solution. One of their most recent enhancements is their mobile-first solution to enable FBC’s and franchisees to complete franchise visitations on their smart-phones and tablets (on and offline).
The history of how the FranConnect Sky Field Ops came about started with requests from franchisors and through a series of comprehensive needs assessment surveys. As a best practice in thought leadership, the company asked its franchisor clients how operations were being handled in the field and what operational issues need attention. Beyond its one on one assessments, the company further gained insights through survey’s such as the most recent survey, which was completed in 2016. FranConnect will be readying its latest operations survey to initiate in the 4th quarter, 2017.
In its most recent survey, FranConnect asked the following questions and received the following answers:
Gerson went on to say “Overall, the survey establishes that franchising has a systemic challenge across the board. It’s clear that most franchisors lack the time and resources for ensuring that franchisees are executing on all cylinders. Nothing will change without effective systems and processes to follow as well as a lack of business plans from the franchisors to solve this problem."
“Based on the answers to these questions and the one on one assessments with franchise operations leaders, FranConnect went to work on evolving a system that addresses these problems one by one,” he added.
The company’s goal was to reduce franchisor operational costs, improve franchisee performance, create more effective field visits, reduce the need for physical visits, increase the quality of visual visits and help to reduce turnover and litigation.
“The backstory is that franchisors had a problem with planning, organizing and carrying out visits and franchisee contact in general. They did some inspections, visiting and phone calls, but they did not have a system in place to ensure that the franchisees would be taking positive steps in closing the gap between their present-state and their desired future state,” added Gerson. "Additionally, insights that were captured were being siloed in Excel Spreadsheets and lacked the level of accessibility and reporting that was necessary to address issues."
This all contributed to the general needs and concerns related to franchisee continuous improvements, and the operational support team have been stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are responsible for franchisee support, but they don’t have a proper support system to provide franchisees the support they in turn needed. They also lack the tools or a proper reporting mechanism to provide feedback to the franchisee’s or to uplevel insights to drive systemic changes. Hence, frustration for the support team.
After years of research and development, the company was able to start rolling out its FranConnect Sky Field Ops application, a real evolution from its earlier systems. The module is now one of the most popular tools in the company’s franchise management software system. Like all of its fifteen (15) modules, the company states that prior to the year 2000 there was no technology built specifically for franchisors to effectively manage their business through the entire franchise lifecycle.
FranConnect created FranConnect Sky Field Ops to transform franchisee performance and to create a system to manage the system of field support monitoring around the franchisee’s compliance. Since the goal of the field operations team is to ensure that every franchise unit is successful, the Sky Field Ops application helps manage the conversation between the franchisor and franchisee in a positive way that fosters openness or collaboration and ultimately a resolution to barriers to success. Without the fact-based assessments and resultant data, it’s a delicate balance that the field operations support staff has to carry out.
Part of the problem is that franchisors focus more time on developing the technical skills required to run the brand’s business within its franchise field support personnel, and less on where and how to foster that openness and collaboration the franchisor wants to see between the field-support team and the franchisees. The system provides them with a means for standardizing processes, measuring key performance indicators, managing the field visit process and reporting and memorization of documentation for operational success. In short, it provides technical data to coach from for a field team chosen for their technical strength, and it also provides clear guidance for franchisees to make their unit successful.
Overall, the module helps the operations team to focus on its top business drivers, which translates into the support team’s top-activities. It also helps the field-support team from feeling overwhelmed. By going through a process to identify the KPIs, the system helps focus efforts on which activities the field team needs to prioritize and provides a dashboard that helps the support and executive teams to monitor data like franchisee sales, training status, infractions, compliance heat maps, etc. It also helps communicate successes to the operations team.
“Where the franchise support team struggles with the lack of time, resources and an effective system to follow to help franchisees, the FranConnect Sky Field Ops module can enable the field team to support operations better,” concluded Gerson. “By using a system with clearly defined indicators to communicate between the FBC’s and franchisees, communication is improved. The module gives operators the ability to look at critical measurements and how franchisees are performing throughout the system. Overall, it improves and makes the coaching process more effective. The support team wins, operations win, the franchisees win which makes the franchisor win!”
FranConnect currently represents more than 600 franchise brands and 110,000 franchisees.

FranConnect, the leading provider of franchise management software solutions, has been voted the #1 supplier in Entrepreneur Magazine’s first-ever Top Franchise Suppliers list, a ranking of the best vendors, suppliers and partners in the franchise industry. Entrepreneur surveyed hundreds of franchisors – from brand-new companies just jumping into franchising to top-ranked Franchise 500® brands with thousands of locations – to find out which suppliers they do business with and how satisfied they are with them.
FranConnect was voted the Top Franchise Supplier for “Online Technology Services,” including CRM, operations, sales and accounting systems – beating out the dominant multi-industry software providers as well as low-cost, limited function applications.
Franchise suppliers were scored based on both how many franchisors reported using them and their satisfaction ratings. The final ranking consists of the top-scoring suppliers in each of seven categories: accounting, banking/financing, legal services, marketing, merchant services, online technology services and public relations.
FranConnect’s simple, fast to deploy and user-friendly platform is trusted by more than 700 franchisors and 140,000 franchisees. It is designed specifically for the franchise industry, giving it a distinct advantage over other multi-industry management tools. That singular focus likely helped FranConnect beat out not only other CRM services, such as Salesforce and HubSpot, but also industry-transcending tech giants like Microsoft.
FranConnect has galvanized its customer base through thought-leadership education, including best practice guidance, insights from sales and operations index reports, conferences and webinars. Customers are showing their appreciation, too. The brand has the highest customer satisfaction score (NPS) of any other technology in its space.
Many FranConnect clients credit the performance of their franchise portfolio in part to the supplier.
“Today, we have five brands in our portfolio, totaling over 1,000 units, using FranConnect,” said Mike Skitzki, COO of Franworth, “Even at that scale, we concluded that FranConnect was the only partner that had all the functionality we needed to manage our brands of all sizes at a reasonable cost. Plus, we have plans to add more brands during the year. Only FranConnect has the franchising expertise and ability to scale with us as we grow.”
FranConnect President Keith Gerson says that the ranking reflects years of work building and refining the company’s suite of products designed to help franchises through every phase of their growth.
“This is a real honor as well as a validation of FranConnect’s vision,” he said. “I’m incredibly proud of our team for their dedicated service and commitment in helping franchisors thrive. By working with hundreds of franchise brands, we’ve learned exactly what their operational concerns are, and we’ve developed tools that effectively address those concerns.”
“To receive this recognition on the heels of a report that shows FranConnect’s customers grow up to 44% faster than the competition is incredibly validating for our whole team,” Gerson said.
Franchise brands eager to expand their reach cannot do so without a plan, a process and the means to execute it. Those key elements extend beyond a dedicated corporate staff and a passionate network of franchisees – it also means having a Software Platform that enables them to scale based on franchising best practices and configures to their unique needs. For more than 700 leading franchisors, that franchise management software solution is FranConnect.
In a recent study, FranConnect customers grew 40%+ faster than the broader franchising market. It’s no surprise that brands across all industries are relying on the platform to optimize their operations and increase revenue.
One brand that recently recognized FranConnect’s strengths as a franchising CRM tool is Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. The nation’s largest barbecue chain – which consistently receives top rankings by publications like Fast Casual – was looking to improve its development process. And after Chad Cione, VP of Real Estate for Dickey’s Capital Group, learned more about FranConnect following an IFA conference in Dallas back in 2017, he knew that the FranConnect CRM tool was the one to choose.
“The addition of FranConnect will be an integral part of our growth. Having a robust CRM system is the key to success in the franchising world. In addition to managing the ROI of our portals, FranConnect gives us the data to track our leads from start to finish. Making sure we ‘touch’ the lead within the first four hours really closes the ratio gap and FranConnect allows us to track all this information very easily,” said Cione. “Additionally, we have added four amazing development sales directors over the past few months to act on these leads and support our growth plans. Finally, the addition of FranConnect allows me the flexibility to focus on the real estate strategy for all of our future Dickey’s locations.”
According to Cione, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit’s decision to utilize FranConnect is already making a positive impact on the brand as it works to grow both domestically and internationally. The biggest factor making that difference is the software’s organizational capabilities.
“The organizational features are second to none,” Cione said. “Now that we have the data we need, we are starting to dive deep into reporting insights that help drive better decision making here at Dickey’s.”
Within the next five years, Dickey’s is aiming to cross the 1,000-unit count milestone. That includes the opening of its first international store this year, which will open the door to even more international expansion in the near future. And going forward, Cione says that FranConnect will be an important partner in Dickey’s long-term global growth plans.
He said, “FranConnect plays a major role in our global growth model. I don’t know what we would do without it.”
Dickey’s is far from the only concept relying on FranConnect throughout the franchise sales process. Right now, there are over 700 brands – and 140,000 franchisees – that manage their businesses throughout the entire franchise lifecycle on the platform. In 2017, that meant users of FranConnect products logged over 16.7 million hours on the platform, with 2,200-plus successful franchise openings managed using FranConnect.
FranConnect engaged a third party analytics firm to collect and parse multiple years of publicly available Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDDs). The unit growth rates are based upon a comprehensive analysis of publicly available FDDs for 2,185 franchise brands – 394 of which are FranConnect customers. Multi-year data was derived by analyzing more than 6,000 FDDs between 2015-2017. Data contained in the Item 20 of each FDD was carefully collected by a team of data experts and then analyzed by former Bain and McKinsey consultants to determine unit growth rates and to compare the growth rate of FranConnect customers relative to the other franchise brands.
Keith Gerson, FranConnect’s President, commented, “We embarked on this ambitious project in the Summer of 2017 and were delighted to confirm that our customers grow much faster than the broader franchising market.” Fountain continued, “We fully realize that we are only one small part of what makes a franchise brand successful. That said, our applications are specifically designed to help our customers grow their units and improve their franchise level economics. The data validates that we are on the right track.”
FranConnect also announced that usage of their applications once again grew significantly year-over-year. During 2017, users of FranConnect products logged over 16.7 million hours. During this same period, more than 1.05 million franchise leads were processed by FranConnect.
The analysis of lead volumes across multiple franchisors’ systems and associated franchise development activities were the genesis for the groundbreaking Franchise Sales Index report published in conjunction with the International Franchise Association (IFA) in late 2017.
Other notable 2017 usage metrics include:
FranConnect is aiming to break more records in 2018 and is more committed than ever to helping its customers outperform the market.
The new FranConnect Where You Work program is far from the only enhancement that the company is making to its market-leading franchise management software suite. The company is also in the middle of completing a critical transition that started in the fourth quarter of 2017. By the end of this quarter, all FranConnect Sky customers—and their data—will be stored in Amazon’s Web Services Cloud (AWS). The move to a new environment brings higher performance, general user improvements and additional data redundancy.
“We’re confident that FranConnect Where You Work is going to be a game changer for our company—and our clients—going forward. It’s another example of how dedicated we are to ensuring that our clients are receiving the best possible support and service,” said Morper. “We’re committed to making 2018 a strong year for our customers, and this new program is an excellent sign of what’s to come. We’ve got some really cool stuff that’s going to be coming out over the course of this year, and it’s going to take our platform to the next level.”
Appointing Gerson to the Titus Center for Franchising’s Advisory Board is a positive move for the organization given his extensive experience in the franchising industry. He brings over 40 years of executive-level expertise to the table, both as a franchisor and franchisee. Gerson boasts a proven track record in building rapid growth as well as highly profitable franchise organizations. For the past six years, Gerson has also paved the way for brand growth and innovation at FranConnect, where he has worked closely with a variety of executive boards and leadership teams that are part of FranConnect’s portfolio of over 700 brands and 140,000-plus franchisee locations.
“Keith Gerson’s vision for franchise development is much appreciated at the Titus Center for Franchising, and we’re thrilled that he’s part of our Advisory Board,” said Dr. John Hayes, Titus Chair for Franchise Leadership and Director of the Titus Center for Franchising, on Gerson’s appointment. “We want to tap into his knowledge and guidance and give him the opportunity to network with our board members as well as Friends of the Titus Center. It’s because of people like Keith that we will be in a better position to educate future generations of franchisors and franchisees.”
While serving on the Titus Center for Franchising’s Advisory Board, Gerson will be contributing content, ideas, tools and resources to help the Center become the leading choice for franchise education internationally. He will also work with other Board of Advisory members to evaluate the Center’s programs and provide expert insights designed to better the program. Ultimately, Gerson will be working alongside the Center to help it realize its operational mission.
“I am thrilled to be a member of the Titus Center for Franchising’s Advisory Board and help educate the next generation of franchising leaders,” said Keith Gerson. “To be a member of the team John has amassed is truly humbling and I look forward to contributing my own experiences as well as offer key insight FranConnect has perfected on franchisor and franchisee best practices.”
The mission for the Titus Center for Franchising is to educate students and business professionals so that they can use franchising as a vehicle to better their lives as business owners, ultimately boosting the business model’s presence worldwide. In addition to a business degree with a focus in franchising, the Center also offers certificate programs for both students and active members of the franchising industry that cover a wide variety of topics, including how to buy a franchise, how to franchise a business, franchise field support and mastering franchisee development. The Center also offers a franchise internship program in addition to job shadowing opportunities at the franchise world headquarters of United Franchise Group.
The Titus Center for Franchising’s mission is already being realized. In its first semester of operation in the fall of 2017, 15 of the 17 students said they plan to buy a franchise, with two saying they plan to become franchisors. That success is also continuing as the program welcomes more students.
Dr. Hayes said, "In our first year of operation, the Titus Center attracted some 40 students who are studying franchising. We think this is just the tip of the iceberg. Younger generations today look at a job as Plan B—their Plan A is to own their own business and they’re discovering that franchising gives them countless opportunities."
FranConnect has made a name for itself in the franchise world by providing a unique franchise management platform to more than 700 franchise brands and 140,000 franchisees. By using a single, cloud-based management platform for all of their franchisees, franchisors are able to effortlessly track previously invisible data across their entire system. For its sales index, FranConnect has anonymized and compared all of that data across franchise systems, offering franchisors a look at the performance and trends of the franchise world at large.
Download: FranConnect Sales Index Report
Keith Gerson, President of FranConnect, told 1851 Franchise Publisher Nick Powills, “The report was based on 487 different franchise brands. It was anonymized and aggregated. We then broke down brand information by the size of the systems, the industries that they were in—so, you can slice it and dice it any which way. We broke it down into a number of classifications, starting with the actual lead generation—the top of the pipeline if you will—and take it all the way through lead nurturing and campaigning. The results are nothing short of spectacular and staggering.”
The report is divided into four segments: Lead Generation, KPI Tracking and Continuous Improvement, Funnel Management, and Nurturing Candidates and Closure. Each segment studies a wealth of data, and when combined, provides a comprehensive picture of the state of the industry. That data is also broken down by franchise size, segment and maturity so franchisors can see which patterns apply to the entire industry and which are correlated to certain categories.
One of the biggest myths that FranConnect’s Franchise Sales Index busts is the idea that there aren’t enough leads in the industry. This Index analyzes data from almost 700,000 leads that came through nearly 500 brands, proving that the leads are there. The more pertinent problem, according to Gerson, is what comes next.
“What we’re finding from the analysis of the data is that a disproportionate amount of leads never receive a return telephone call, it’s shocking. A lot of times, we’re damning the source. ‘Portals don’t work, trade shows don’t work, etc. The truth is, there’s a problem with the execution and it comes through loud and clear when we’re looking at this comprehensive data set.
The sales index is designed to provide relevant data that becomes actionable for franchise brands across the world. FranConnect’s analysis provides an entirely unique glimpse into the state of the franchise world, and a careful reading of the report can help development teams refine their growth strategies and show operations managers which practices have proven effective across systems. And as Gerson notes, “FranConnect’s Franchise Sales Index is the only report of its kind in the industry, which makes these insights so invaluable.”
He said, “Every other previous franchise industry report has been somewhat anecdotal and self-reported information. What’s really differentiated here is this is based on the actual data coming from nearly 700,000 leads that are passing through the same system used by hundreds of leading brands, providing us the ability to track all leads collected all the way through the sales process.”

“I was one of those kids that would seek out every opportunity to make music with others,” Price said. “Whether it was garage bands, concert bands, orchestras or a cappella—performing with others was central to my growth.”
It's easy to see how his three boys, now 20, 18 and 16, were kids raised in an environment where music was a part of their everyday lives.
“Our kids were tripping over instruments. It is not a surprise that one of our kids recruited the entire family into a band, and we became like the modern-day Partridge family, playing cover music and local gigs,” Price said. “We even recorded an album, toured in an RV and performed on national TV.”
The passion for creativity stuck. Price’s youngest son will perform at Carnegie Hall for the second time this spring, his middle child just released his debut solo album and the oldest plays as much guitar as his architecture studies allow. Price said, “My sons are all too good for me now, but thankfully they occasionally indulge me with a jam."
It was this experience with his own kids that made School of Rock more than a job opportunity. Price feels like it is a calling. He wants every kid to experience the transformational power of music education that he experienced as a child and as a parent.
Price’s journey to multi-unit management began with a stint in management consulting. Price then earned his MBA at Harvard Business School, where he became fascinated by the relationship between brands and consumers. He worked on a field-study for Crate & Barrel before spending six years at H-E-B Grocery in San Antonio, where he ran their own brand division and led company marketing.
“This family-owned retailer was maniacal about service, experience and product quality,” Price said. “I was inspired by H-E-B’s commitment to do the right thing. Always.”
Following his time at H-E-B, Price was CMO for the highly-regarded convenience store chain, Wawa. “Wawa was more than a brand. It was a part of its customers’ family. I grew by learning how to evolve a brand so well-regarded by its communities.”
Price was then recruited to CVS Pharmacy to assume the role of CMO, which he held for nearly eight years. Price had to rely on his understanding of multi-unit operations, but as the company evolved from its retail heritage to a broader healthcare positioning, he had to learn constantly.
“My tenure as CMO of CVS coincided with a time at which company strategy shifted dramatically and consumer marketing became more rigorous and quantitative,” he said. “I was blessed to work with curious and imaginative change agents in our stores and headquarters.”
Price entered the world of franchising when he was tapped to be President of Edible Arrangements, a founder-led organization looking to accelerate its growth. At Edible Arrangements, Price developed a deep regard for the power of the entrepreneur. “Building a franchise for the long term requires reverence for your franchise owners. I learned that system growth is anchored in the performance of existing franchisees."
The opportunity to be School of Rock CEO created a “perfect blend,” according to Price. He felt that the brand had the ideal combination of passionate entrepreneurs, strong brand awareness, a differentiated strategy and solid financial performance. Most importantly, it is powered by purpose, which Price called the “most potent ingredient for business success.”
But running School of Rock isn’t all rock ‘n’ roll. “Superior infrastructure and technology tools are essential in our business,” said Price. “Our rapid growth requires rigor and automation so we can tend to the more abstract and creative components of the business.”
The company will operate over 220 schools in 10 markets by the end of 2018. Meeting the needs of existing franchises and new ones demands investments in people, process and technology. Price has announced a wave of new partnerships, including one with FranConnect for franchise management. Price indicates that he wants to ensure that all of School of Rock’s technology tools can fully channel the energy of his franchisees. According to Price, “Our IT tools need to match the flexibility and capability of our owners and their teams – they deserve it.”
Throughout Price’s career, he has been with companies that value technology as an enabler of strategy. When asked what makes a franchise management system different from non-franchise systems, Price points out that the key difference is in the design. In an exclusively-owned corporate environment, data is meant to be aggregated, with an almost gravitational pull of insights up toward corporate decision makers.
“At School of Rock, I am looking to unleash our franchising software to simplify our owners’ lives in order that they can invest their time in their students and staff members.”
Price got exposed to FranConnect’s franchise management software solution upon arriving at School of Rock. Since joining, he has increased the focus on fully exploiting the advanced functionality available within FranConnect. Price adds, “As I looked into the breadth of tools that FranConnect offers, I was excited about the possibilities to work more effectively with our franchisees.”
Much more went into the selection of FranConnect for the next phase of School of Rock’s growth. “We looked closely at the company’s leadership and customer support resources that the FranConnect team is investing for the long run,” Price said. “We need a reliable partner that matches our desire to build an enduring brand. Just like us, FranConnect is investing heavily in its product to exceed customer expectations. The development roadmap that FranConnect has shared meets my institutional growth objectives and those of other leading large franchisors,” according to Price.
By harnessing technology to help unleash growth, Price looks towards the future and reflects on what success looks like to him. Price said he wakes up every day feeling a drive to make an impact and is on a deeply inspired mission to make School of Rock the largest and most influential community of global innovators.
“Only some of our students will choose to become professional musicians,” Price admits. “But through the study of music, 100 percent of our kids will become more confident and impactful people. We are preparing our students for a complicated world, in which collaboration and co-creation are more important than ever.”
As Price explains how systems and strategy combine to build a “growing, passionate community of creators prepared to change the world,” he speaks with zeal. “As we scale, we are enriching lives through performance-based music education. More importantly, we are building an army prepared to change the world. Leading this effort is the best job on the planet.”
1851: Tell us about yourself.
Wood: I have been in franchising for 32 years. I started in college with our sister company, College Pro Painters, in the 1980s. I was a franchisee for a few years. Now I’m part of the franchisor and have been with company ever since.
1851: How did you get involved with FranConnect?
Wood: I’ve participated in industry franchise leadership teams for the past 25 years, which is how I know Keith Gerson [FranConnect’s President]. FCI has used several franchise management systems over the last few years. Our old franchise management system started to cause us pain, and one of our sister companies was already using FranConnect. I knew that Keith could service our relationship with FranConnect in a way that made me feel confident.
1851: What kind of pain were you having?
Wood: We were working with our old franchise management system since 2006. The platform was fine, adequate and up-to-date at first. As time went on, its platform was not innovating or being developed. It became antiquated and clunky. It wasn’t operating well with respect to tracking franchisees and simple functions like that. It was obvious we needed a new home.
1851: What motivated you to make the switch once and for all?
Wood: We don’t take making a move like this one lightly. If we don’t have to move, we’d rather not. But we needed better access controls. For example, we needed to give outside suppliers and vendors access to certain files and data without giving access to all of our data. We also wanted brokers to see available territories without seeing our whole CRM.
One of our sister companies was already using FranConnect, so we were able to validate with them. We also received a list of references to check out.
1851: Was the system delivered as promised?
Wood: Yes. There was so much functionality with FranConnect; we are continually learning and uncovering opportunities we didn’t know we didn’t understand before. They continue to send folks to our office to train us.
1851: How has the software helped you in your business in a way you didn’t expect?
Wood: Being able to integrate our franchisees’ financials into the financial module has helped us tremendously. Whereas our franchisees were all using different accounting systems prior to moving to FranConnect, we now have them standardize on QuickBooks Online, whose feed syncs with FranConnect’s financial module.
1851: Is FranConnect on the cloud or is the software installed manually and pushed out?
Wood: It’s completely cloud-based.
1851: What’s new three years later?
Wood: We recently hosted some FranConnect team members. They participated in a meeting we were having, and they uncovered some things we didn’t know our software could do. One of them was Outlook integration, which we are working on now. Instead of manually archiving emails going back and forth between FCI and franchisees, they can feed into the database within FranConnect automatically, which maps and archives the emails.
1851: Anything else you would like to add?
Wood: FranConnect has an open-minded attitude towards helping its clients. Their willingness and assertiveness to ensure we are happy and continually onboarded properly is refreshing. Their platform has evolved in our three years with them, and they are continually reassessing it. They offer us up the opportunity periodically to come in and get trained on new developments. Or they come down and work with our team, reviewing our platforms and walking through different features and benefits we weren’t using, and so we keep learning. On their most recent trip, we realized we were underutilizing the franchise development portal. I anticipate we’ll keep making changes that help us improve.
FranConnect is a highly configurable and comprehensive franchise management software solution to help dynamic brands manage and grow their franchise systems.
Floor Coverings International is the #1 Mobile Flooring Franchise in North America. Floor Coverings International is a subsidiary of FirstService Brands.
The brand takes their mission of becoming trusted partners very seriously, not only with their customers but with their franchisees as well. Managing such rapid expansion requires incredible systems and foundations to ensure they are able to provide the best corporate support possible. FranConnect, with their highly configurable and comprehensive franchise management software, provides the solution that helps this dynamic brand manage and grow their franchise system.
Kevin Wilson, CEO of Mosquito Joe says, “FranConnect is a valuable partner helping us run all aspects of our business better. They help us manage the entire lifecycle of a franchise. We can manage everything across the entire franchise lifecycle from one centralized location.”
Mosquito Joe is one of the over 600 companies that utilize FranConnect’s market leading franchise management software to maximize their sales and drive peak performance. As the largest software company in the marketplace today that is dedicated exclusively to the franchising industry, Wilson likens them to “a thousand-pound gorilla in the franchising world.” For over 16 years, FranConnect has provided an all-inclusive foundation for the entire franchising lifecycle “and they just keep getting more and more robust” Wilson adds.
With their Customer Relationship Management system built specifically for franchisors, Mosquito Joe’s mutual franchise candidate evaluation process is much easier to efficiently manage .“From the very beginning of our relationship with a lead, FranConnect creates a record that helps us follow it through the sales process. It allows us to create pipelines and track where all our leads are coming from.”
Once that lead has been converted to a sale, FranConnect helps connect the new franchisee with their next steps. The Opener application streamlines franchisee onboarding. Wilson says, “A series of centralized checklists and forms move our new franchise partners along with their next steps towards getting their business up and running in a short period of time.”
FranConnect is also helping the company with their royalty payments and compliance tracking. Wilson adds, “They help us manage our business relationship with the franchisee. We can create popups and timelines to keep us all on track. It keeps records for us. We have some insurance and licensing requirement tracking that is really simplified through FranConnect. Franchisees have access and the royalty payment process is made very convenient. If there is an issue that franchisees ask us to look into, a ticket is created so we can track the progress to ensure a resolution. It helps us help our franchisees.”
Beyond the sales and administration functionalities, the software is also a resource for the franchisee. The marketing applications are robust. Wilson comments,” We are able to keep our marketing materials in a repository for franchisees to access on demand. They can buy and order supplies straight from the program. And, it all flows seamlessly. We can connect 3rd party software, such as customer satisfaction surveys and other tools to help franchisees run their business better.”
A feature that Mosquito Joe is really excited about for their franchisees is “The Hub”. This application allows for discussion and networking between the franchisees. This social aspect enhances and strengthens the core of the network. Wilson comments, “We are stronger together and this software connects us.”
With this comprehensive software on their side, Mosquito Joe’s exponential growth can continue at the pace it has been going without sacrificing on franchisee relations. FranConnect helps them connect with their system in a way that benefits every level and every stage of the franchising process.
In closing, Wilson said “FranConnect has been a great partner for us. Reporting is made easy. The dashboards are user friendly and the recent addition of a mobile version has been a game changer. Overall the company is very helpful and responsive to our needs.”
The Home Care Association of America predicts that people aged 65 or older will grow from 56 million in 2020 to as much as 84 million by 2050. The Home Care Association of America also predicts that 70 percent of adults aged 65-plus will need assistance with daily living activities at some point in their lives as their health declines. Traditionally, when additional help was needed, children and family members cared for aging loved ones. But today, significant gaps have emerged with this model, and as America’s overall population ages, the total population of potential family caregivers is shrinking.
BrightStar Care was founded to meet that demand. BrightStar Care is the recognized leader in the home health care franchise industry, providing a proven business model, infrastructure, training and ongoing support necessary to help franchisees launch and run successful home-care businesses. Most home care companies limit their service offerings to companion care for seniors, but BrightStar Care provides the full range of in-home care services from meal prep and light housekeeping to medication management and infusion.
Today there are more than 300 locations throughout the United States and Canada. The brand’s main goal is to continue growing the business while delivering and improving the support, resources and programs that keep the franchisees successful. To help meet those growth goals for new franchise development, opening new stores and in building local marketing, BrightStar Care turned to FranConnect franchise management software for help.
BrightStar Care took a multi-pronged approach with FranConnect. Because its franchise Sales CRM is built specifically for franchisors, FranConnect provides BrightStar Care with an all-inclusive foundation for its sales process. FranConnect Sky Sales has helped the BrightStar Care team manage all of its sales processes in one central place—allowing the brand to easily capture leads, determine conversion rates and lay out the timeline from leads to sales. Sales Managers can quickly put together an up-to-date list of where each candidate is in the process and what next steps need to be taken.
“FranConnect is a one-stop tool that allows me to efficiently manage my entire sales process. It keeps us on a well-defined sale process and within our targeted timelines, from lead origination to awarding franchises,” said Tony Padulo, the executive vice president of global franchise development.
FranConnect has guided new franchisees through the business process, too. BrightStar Care franchisees use FranConnect Sky Marketing Applications for lead nurturing and customer management, allowing them to easily create and run email campaigns, keep in touch with their customers and prospective customers and track success. Franchisees also use FranConnect’s reputation management capabilities to monitor their review scores across Google Plus, Facebook and Yelp. In fact, since using FranConnect, the brand has increased the number of online reviews by 45 percent, and its average general rating score has gone up by 27 percent.
“FranConnect franchise management software provides us with one central marketing dashboard from which we can access all of our marketing services. For example, every office can link to their Net Promoter score dashboard directly from FranConnect. It’s organized in a way so franchisees can get to what they want very quickly,” said Matt Quandt, BrightStar Care’s senior director of marketing. “The lead nurturing and reputation management capabilities also make a big difference. Being a franchisee is challenging no matter what industry you’re in. And FranConnect gives our franchisees the visibility they need into what consumers are saying about their business in one place.”
Soon after, K-9 Resorts found that its rapidly growing franchising system needed more support and tighter processes that only a well-designed franchise technology solution could provide. That’s when they turned to FranConnect.
“It was clear that as we continued to branch out, we would need something connecting our business together on both the corporate and local ownership levels. So we started looking into different programs and tools that would work for us,” said Jason Parker, co-founder and co-CEO of K-9 Resorts. “Everyone we consulted—from industry professionals at the International Franchise Association’s conference to our own online research—had nothing but nice things to say about FranConnect.”
As a result, K-9 Resorts ultimately decided to partner with FranConnect for sales and operations support this past June. The brand relies on FranConnect’s software to streamline processes and stay organized while developing new franchises. And even though K-9 Resorts has only been using FranConnect for a few months, Parker says they’re already seeing the program’s many benefits.
“Overall, FranConnect has helped us become more organized and efficient, especially on the sales end of our business. We’re able to keep better track of our leads, which ultimately helps us engage our prospective franchisees more than we were ever able to in the past,” Parker said. “The same goes for the operations side of our business—FranConnect creates a central place for all of our current franchisee information, while at the same time keeping track of where future locations are in their development process.”
Within the next month, K-9 Resorts is also planning to leverage FranConnect’s unique feature that allows franchisors to better engage with their current local business owners. The luxury pet care franchise will launch an intranet system (FranConnect’s The Hub) that will open the doors of communication between corporate team members and franchisees and streamline business for its owners across the country.
According to Parker, this central access to information is an essential part of K-9 Resorts’ mission to have 100 units in the next five years.
“There’s no doubt that FranConnect will help position K-9 Resorts for rapid growth. We’re incredibly pleased with the tool so far, and we’re excited to keep rolling out its features across our entire franchise system,” Parker said.
No matter what industry you’re in, brands that operate within franchising all share one common goal: to grow by adding more units. It seems simple enough, but there’s an endless list of factors that play a role in determining whether or not a franchise is successful. However, one thing is clear—brands that tap into the power of technology are more likely to make their expansion goals a reality. That’s where FranConnect comes into play—the only software company in the market that’s exclusively dedicated to serving franchise businesses.
Lightbridge Academy has seen firsthand the value that FranConnect brings to the table.
“It became abundantly clear that we not only needed access to important data, but we needed to also analyze the data based on our unique situation to diagnose problems and identify strengths to help us expand our business efficiently and sustainably,” said Brenda Febbo, the chief marketing officer of Lightbridge Academy. “We quickly realized that there’s nothing else out there like FranConnect. We’ve been able to customize its tools to meet our brand’s specific needs.”
Founded in 1997 by husband and wife duo Guy and Julia Falzarano, the unique brand provides early education and child care to children ages six weeks through kindergarten, as well as special programming for children up to 10 years old during school holidays, breaks and summer camp. The concept quickly resonated with the community, and under Falzarano’s leadership, Lightbridge Academy’s growth took off and in 2011, he decided to launch a franchise opportunity.
As franchising got underway, the company realized the need for a tool that would help connect all areas of the fast-growing business under one umbrella. Lightbridge Academy turned to FranConnect’s. FranConnect provides franchisors with industry-specific software for management of and improved visibility into development, construction, operations, finance and marketing so they can improve business outcomes—from awarding more franchises to growing unit revenues.
FranConnect has a long history of helping franchise brands take their businesses to the next level. The brand’s proven franchise management software currently helps more than 650 brands and 110,000 franchisees run their day-to-day operations. In particular, Febbo wanted to utilize FranConnect to help track and respond to incoming leads.
“By using FranConnect’s reporting and analytics, we can get a better understanding of where our leads are coming from, where our ROI is in marketing and advertising expenditures and where we are getting the best results,” Febbo said. “This data gives us what we need to drive our business and lead generation in a much more targeted, thoughtful manner. We can easily pinpoint what advertising campaigns are performing best and what regions and centers are referring the most leads. In the end, this allows us to understand what’s working, what’s not working and where we need to spend our money and energy to continue growing.”
So far, that tactic is working. Since launching their franchising opportunity nearly five years ago, Lightbridge has grown from a single location in Iselin, New Jersey, to over 80 child care centers either open or in development throughout Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
“FranConnect connects all areas of a franchise organization—from development and grand openings, to driving leads and tracking franchisee marketing efforts, the value of having all of this information in one place is immeasurable. It introduces a certain fluidity between departments to share information, helping to prevent silos within your organization,” Febbo said. “It’s an important system that has really helped Lightbridge Academy thrive.”
